10 Questions with McKayla Maroney!

We heard you started gymnastics after watching a Disney movie?
I totally remember that. That was like a vision in my head of me staring at the TV watching Tarzan and running around on all fours. I don’t know why, I just love that movie. It inspired me to be like the crazy little kid running on all fours. My mom took me to gymnastics because I just had so much energy. That’s what got it all started.

What is your first memory of the Olympic Games?
I remember watching Carly Patterson stick her Double Arabian beam dismount. I just remember being like, oh – my – gosh. That must be the best feeling to know that you finished off so strong on an event like that at the Olympics. I just remember being like, I want to be there. I want to be one of them. I want to be a gymnast on the Olympic team. That’s kind of just when my dream started.

Describe what it was like to compete at Worlds and the preparations for such a big meet.
First we were at camp for like two weeks. We compete. We don’t stop. Then we get on the plane and then we’re in Tokyo- totally different time [zone]. The second we get there we have to do a hallway workout. We go to bed, wake up the next morning, and start our workout. It’s just so totally grinding. You’re exhausted. Your body hurts, but you want to be on this team so bad. You want to prove everybody that you’re the girl and you want it. And you just do it.

The U.S. women are a close team. What is it like to compete against your friends with just five spots on the Olympic Team?
Everybody wants a spot. I respect each girl and we’re all best friends. We just all do what we need to do to do the best routine that we can and if you make the spot you make it.

When you are chalking up before a vault, what is going through your mind?
Sometimes I visualize and sometimes I kind of just like try to feel it. Sometimes you don’t go for, I don’t know, like forty-five minutes you haven’t done the vault and you’re not warmed up or anything. You have to pretend like you just did one.

When did you compete an Amanar vault for the first time?
The first time I did it was at Visa Championships and I was thirteen years old. I was just really little and I didn’t really know what was going on. But I just did it, and I was just very happy that I landed on my feet.

You are known for vault, but say that floor is your favorite event…
I really like floor because I think it’s the only event that you can really show everybody yourself. You can dance and you can show people who you are and what you’re there for. I think it’s just the event that people can see your true inner self. I really like that about the floor.

What is your favorite TV show?
My favorite TV show is probably “Keeping Up With the Kardashians.” I like “Glee” and I like the new episodes of the “The Lying Game.” All the girls on the USA team, we all watched them together during Worlds and it was really fun.

What kind of music do you listen to?
I like Nicki Minaj, Rihanna and Justin Bieber.

Liking Justin Bieber seems like a pre-requisite for being on the U.S. Team…are you as desperate to meet him as some of your teammates?
I think he has really good music, and- I don’t know, I just think his songs are really catchy. Of course I’d want to meet him, but I’m probably not as obsessed as some people. I went to the Selena Gomez concert and he appeared. Girls were crying on the floor and I didn’t understand. I was like, why are they crying? I didn’t get it.

McKayla Maroney - Raise Our Flag

The United States Olympic Committee announced on April 18 the launch of Raise our Flag, an exciting and innovative new program that gives every American the chance to support our Olympic and Paralympic athletes by contributing a stitch to the American flag that will accompany the U.S. Olympic Team to the London 2012 Olympic Games this summer.

Supporters can purchase a single stitch in the flag for $12 by visiting TeamUSA.org now through July 12, 2012. Every purchased stitch receives a number and will be honored on the site’s Donor Wall - where it can be dedicated to a friend, family member or Team USA athlete, and then easily shared through Facebook and Twitter.

An update from USA Gymnastics regarding 2008 Olympians Shawn Johnson, Nastia Liukin and Chellsie Memmel: At this stage of their training, they were unable to fulfill camp expectations, which were to verify at least two full events. They have decided to continue their training at their respective clubs in order to participate at the 2012 Secret U.S. Classic.
